Hurghada Airport: Cheap Flights, Transfers and Terminal

Hurghada International Airport lies only 5 to 6 kilometres from the centre of Hurghada on the Red Sea coast and is Egypt's busiest airport after Cairo. International flights are handled in the modern Terminal 1, opened in 2015, and the airport is the gateway to the resort hotels of El Gouna, Makadi Bay, Sahl Hasheesh and Soma Bay. Thanks to year-round sunshine, October to April is the peak winter-sun season for European travellers.

From Germany, Air Cairo flies to Hurghada from Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Munich, Berlin, Hanover, Stuttgart, Leipzig and Hamburg, and Condor, Eurowings and TUI fly also serve it from German airports. Edelweiss and Air Cairo fly from Zurich, Austrian and Air Cairo from Vienna, and EgyptAir offers connections via Cairo. Hurghada is by far the largest destination for holiday flights from the German-speaking countries to Egypt.

The cheapest flights to Hurghada usually come up in the hot summer months from May to September and on midweek dates; the October to April season, Christmas and Easter call for early booking. The airport has no rail or regular bus link; most hotels organise transfers and taxis wait in front of the terminal. Ride-hailing apps such as Uber and Careem also work in Hurghada. Fares change, so ask your hotel for current details.

• Taxi: the ride to the town centre takes 10 to 15 minutes; agree the fare before you set off or use an app.
• Transfers: El Gouna to the north is about half an hour away, Makadi and Sahl Hasheesh to the south half an hour, Soma Bay around an hour; a pre-booked transfer is the most comfortable option.
• Car hire: international companies have desks in arrivals; the coastal road reaches all the resort areas.

Terminal 1 offers duty-free shops, cafés and restaurants, currency exchange and ATMs, a pharmacy, car-hire desks and lounges that can be entered for a fee; Wi-Fi is available in the terminal areas. Queues can form for visas and passport control on arrival; many European nationals can obtain a visa on arrival, but check the current requirements before you travel. The terminal operates around the clock.

An open-air car park for short and long stays lies in front of the terminal, with rates displayed at the entrance. As most visitors use transfers, the car park is mainly used for pick-ups and short waits.
