View over Istanbul's old town with mosques by the Bosphorus

Istanbul is the only major city in the world that spans two continents. With just a weekend, don't try to tick everything off – choose deliberately. Our route takes you to the highlights in 48 hours without rushing.

Day 1: Old town and bazaars

Start early at Hagia Sophia, before the tour groups arrive. The Blue Mosque and the Basilica Cistern are only a few minutes' walk away.

  • 08:30 – Hagia Sophia
  • 10:30 – Blue Mosque and Hippodrome
  • 13:00 – Lunch in Sirkeci
  • 15:00 – Grand Bazaar and Spice Bazaar

Day 2: Bosphorus and Kadıköy

Take the public ferry from Eminönü to Kadıköy – cheaper than any boat tour, with the same view. The Asian side offers markets, cafés and a relaxed atmosphere.

Tip: Top up your Istanbulkart at the airport. It works on the metro, tram, bus and ferry.

Getting in from the airport

From Istanbul Airport (IST), the M11 metro reaches Gayrettepe in about 40 minutes. From Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) on the Asian side, the M4 is the fastest connection.
